“What keeps you up at night?” I asked.

“Frankly, in this economy, I worry about sales, and getting a good price for my apples.”

I hung up the phone and thought about that. We happen to source bottles overseas. We also
have a few really good food distribution centers in China. What if we put these two together?

I picked up the phone and let a rather surprised apple grower know,

“I think I solved that sales problem of yours.”

After that, he’s been calling for a lot more things these days.

That’s how the conversation started. When the dust settled, it became another way we
stepped up for one of our clients.

“We don’t have the cultural knowledge or insight to manage offshore production well enough,
so I’m hoping you can help us out.”

“We can.”

And that’s how we became the trusted partner they were looking for. Initially we provided
them with the on-site QA needed. Eventually we ended up managing the entire supply chain.

Amazing what you can accomplish when you combine experience, knowledge and trust.

“You guys really hit a home run on this one.”

It started with a quick check-in call on Thursday afternoon. “I’d love to chat, but
I’ve got a bit of a crisis. I need to call you back,” he said. Now this client is
pretty nonplussed, so I had to ask, “Anything I can help you with?” “Probably not.
We need to set up a distribution center in Memphis.” “Give me ’til Monday?” I asked.
“Sure,” he said, humoring me. Ten days later, his DC was up and ready.

Now you might think supplying paper for color printers may be a simple
automatic order refill.
Not so with test papers. And not so when those papers
need to be delivered globally for Hewlett-Packard. It’s a logistics nightmare,
where every day includes the usual, the unusual and the urgent. But ongoing
needs, even where the individual orders are small and custom, are challenges
that we relish.

Ben got the call after lunch one Tuesday. It’s the call we all dread — there was
a problem. Turns out, a customer’s poly bags were splitting at the seams and
failing to hold.

By the end of the day, Ben had identified the bad batch and had it pulled from inventory.

“Good news,” Ben told the agitated customer. “We have another lot in our inventory to
replace your bad lot.”

“That’s great, Ben, but we’re dead in the water here.”

“More good news,” Ben reassured his customer. “The truck is already loaded.
I have a CDL. And I’ll be on the road to Seattle by 7 am to change out that stock
for you myself.”

“Wow. Fantastic. Thanks,” came the startled, but pleased, response.
“See you in the morning. I’ll have the coffee ready.”

Evaluating and buying stretch film on price translates to more money spent on film
and poor load stability. Ben, recognizing how customers have been trained to think,
consistently demonstrates how the right piece of unitizing equipment combined with
the right stretch film will always yield less film, a stable load and money saved.
This combination makes a big difference!
